Kennel Club Accredited Breeders

For any client who lives in England and wishes to visit and meet us and our doggie family, we will be delighted to pick you up from either Aberdeen Airport or Aberdeen Train Station and take you back for your return.

Frank and I would like to welcome you to our Flat Coat Retriever site, on our site you will see pictures and pedigrees of our flatties. We have some of the very best breeding in our dogs, on the "liver" side there is the famous Wizardwood kennels which is owned by Audrey and Peter Forster in Staffordshire, two of the most knowledgable people in the flat coat world. They have been breeding Flat Coats for many many years, they work and show their dogs with great success. Our favourite flat coat Taffy (Wizardwood Tawny Taffrail) came from them at the age of 6 months, he is the most lovely dog, faithful, beautiful exuberant and gentle. He lives in our home with a collection of kittens and cats who love him dearly and take the most awful liberties with him, this includes swinging from a very waggy tail and lying on his stomach when he is upside down having a snooze!

Our girls came from Daldarroch near Dumfries and from Ireland a lovely Princestar bred bitch. we also have a lovely bitch who came from the Belsud Kennels owned by Mrs Mary Grimes who unfortunately died last year All our dogs have a fantastic life with us on our farm in the North East of Scotland. We are proud of the puppies that we breed, they are healthy happy dogs and we have many many photos and cards from grateful people who now share their lives with a Littlehill bred Flat Coat. We hope that you enjoy your visit to our site.

ALTHOUGH KENNELED AT NIGHT - IN THEIR CENTRALLY HEATED KENNELS -THEY ENJOY THE FREEDOM THAT ALL FLAT COAT RETRIEVERS DOGS REQUIRE, PLENTY OF FIELDS TO RUN IN, PONDS TO GET SOAKED IN AND WOODS TO EXPLORE. WE ARE IN THE LUCKY POSITION OF HAVING 86 ACRES OF OUR OWN LAND ON WHICH TO EXERCISE OUR DOGS AWAY FROM ALL ROADS. OUR FLAT COAT RETRIEVERS ARE VERY MUCH PART OF OUR LIVES AT LITTLEHILL AND HOPEFULLY WILL BE FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.

Our Story

I have bred pedigree chocolate labrador retriever dogs for many years and around five years ago we looked into the possibility of owning and breeding flat coat retrievers. This may sound a simple thing to do but as we started approaching breeders we began to realise very quickly that a lot of flat coat breeders were not the easiest of people to deal with. Their attitude was very much that they have the right to breed flat coats but no one else should. We found the attitude of some breeders was very rude but then we were lucky enough to go to some breeders who were most helpful and pleasant and only to happy to help.. more >>>>

KC Accreditation Scheme

After much careful consideration and thought, Frank and I have decided to resign from the KC Accreditation Scheme. This was not an easy decision to come to but we felt we had no choice. In January of this year the scheme put forward many new 'recommendations' for members These recommendations covered the 70 plus breeds that are owned and bred by members. Of these recommendations the only breed to have 'three litters in the breeding life of the bitch' was the Flat Coat Retriever. I wrote many times to Mr G Dymock the scheme manager asking why the FCR was the only breed to have this recommendation and despite my best efforts never got a sensible reply to my question. It seems that this was taken on board by the scheme on the advice of the Flat Coat Clubs with no veterinary evidence to reasoning behind it. This is discrimination against one particular breed.

The Curly Coated Retriever or the Chesapeake Bay Retriever have no such recommendations. We feel that the choice of whether a FCR bitch has three litters or more in her lifetime should be a matter for the breeder and should be based on the health, and general wellbeing of the bitch not on the whim of a society, who's committees are in many cases made up of people who have never owned, let alone bred a FCR. or any other breed of dog. As responsible breeders of FCR, Labradors (over thirty years) and Border Terriers we followed KC advice on health screening long before we were members of the scheme and shall continue to do so. We pride ourselves on the healthy, active loving puppies that we breed and with the fantastic relationship we have with our many clients over the years.

We offer the use of one of our stud dogs to owners who wish to breed the FCR (to health screened bitches) and although we do endorse our KC registration as 'progeny not to be registered' will lift this endorsements to clients who have given much thought to the breeding of puppies, have hip scored and eye tested their bitch and that the bitch is over the age of two years old.
